Ben over at Panbo ran a nice piece on the introduction of Fleet Broadband. As I was reading it a memo came across my desk from Stratos, the Global Satellite service provider, with all their details on providing airtime.
What caught my eye was a brief mention that the satellite isn't up yet for the Pacific Ocean Region. It's due to be launched next Spring. They recommend sticking with a Fleet 33 or 55, and upgrading it later to Broadband,  if you need phone and internet service on the West Coast sooner than later. For the Atlantic and Indian Oceans you are good to go.
So this poses another question, what does it mean to upgrade later? It means buy a whole new system according to KVH. I spoke with them today and a Fleet 33 or 55 will not be upgradeable to Broadband.
It's like NavNet3D all over again, we're in hurry up and wait mode for the new great stuff that's coming!Â
Don't forget to use MadMariner's new RSS feed, I just set it up through my Yahoo homepage and it's a great way to see new posts as they come up.
Everyone have a Great Thanksgiving, try to get some boating in!

West Coast? You mean like on the other side of the Great Lakes?
Sorry, I should have mentioned the satellite hole in my Fleet Broadband entry. But do check out the coverage map; it looks to me like the coasts of Mexico and California are covered fine by sat F2. You'd have to go up to BC or out to Hawaii to reach the edge of its foot print.Â
Hi Ben- Maybe I should have said Left Coast. That gives you both a geographical and political position!
I'll have to look into that when I get into the office tomorrow. After speaking with the KVH rep, seeing the Stratos letter and talking to KVH themselves, I didn't get the impression there was an alternate so I didn't think to look for one. Interesting. Hope you had a great holiday.
