iPhone/Garmin-The on & off the water possibilities

I've been playing with my new iPhone for a week or so now (thanks Santa) and can't get enough.

If you are a regular reader of HardWired you will know that I have been in love with the Garmin Nuvi 660 for awhile.  The iPhone hasn't quite replaced my beloved Nuvi (named Lola) yet, but I do feel like I'm cheating on her.  The two together, especially sharing Bluetooth, have about everything I could need for navigation and communications on the road.

Rebates, Do you take advantage?

Raymarine is probably the most aggresive manufacturer when it comes to marketing. They constantly produce road shows with a decked out semi-truck full of gear, they advertise all over the place, they sponsor both power boating and sailing events and they also offer hundreds or thousands of dollars in end user rebates.

New Nobeltec VNS MAX Pro- New Name, New Charts

Nobeltec has been tweaking their original version of Visual Navigation Suite for a long time now.  Version 8 was a fairly drastic upgrade and came along to compliment Microsofts revolutionary Windows XP operating system, but, save for feature enhancements and bug fixes, the program hasn't changed all that much over the years.  This is by design as Nobeltec is proud that much of their loyal and passionate customers know the familiar graphical user interface like the back of their hands and there's no good reason to change for the sake of changing.

Top 10 Breakthroughs for 2007

Here are my selections for top 10 marine electronics Hot Products of 2007:

1. Nuvi 660

Ok, this isn't really a marine product, but Garmin is a marine company also and I love the thing. It had to be #1 on some list!

2. AIS

It's pretty hard to run into someone if you have a radar equipped with AIS nowadays and that will continue to get better as more people install them on their boats.

Black Friday- Green for Garmin

You could look at that name and dread the day after Thanksgiving as the start of the Christmas shopping season or you could look at the bright side and consider it the day all the retail outlets get out of the red for the year.  For Garmin, it should be called green Friday.

Fleet Broadband-West Coast issues

Ben over at Panbo ran a nice piece on the introduction of Fleet Broadband.  As I was reading it a memo came across my desk from Stratos, the Global Satellite service provider, with all their details on providing airtime.

Bridgeline Packages

With the recent introduction of Furuno's FI50 Instruments, Garmin's new instruments and autopilots and the existing full lines available from Raymarine and Simrad, all the the players have aligned themselves with complete soup-to-nuts packages.

NMEA2000, Welcome to this decade!

I've had a week to digest all the buzz from the Lauderdale Boat Show.  It's already clear that NavNet3D was the big winner at the show but the other breakout performance award should go to NMEA2000.

The name is all wrong now.  It should have been called NMEA 2010, then it would look ahead of it's time instead of woefully behind, but the fact is that it's here now and it's here to stay.  All the major manufacturers in electronics, engines, electrical systems and monitoring have either already embraced the protocol or have something in the works.

NAVnet 3D, Video Game Technology Takes Navigation to Another Level

NAVnet3D GroupI said that Furuno's new products had to be pretty damn Earth shattering to live up to the hype and secrecy floating around before Wednesday's grand introduction.

G-Series Components - Keyboard and Main Processor

G-Series Command Center Keyboard

The G-Series command center keyboard is the main user interface control for for the entire navigation system. It will control multiple processor modules, meaning you will be able to switch between several radar units, entertainment screens or any combination of applications available. There is a nice LCD screen right on the controller so you can keep track of what you're doing at any given time.
