G-Series Components

I'm checking out some of the new G-Series components and I think I'll start a little series on what the various components will be to make up a system.

The first is the GVM400 Video Module. It looks like the current DSM300 sounder module in size and shape, and will be integrated using SeatalkHS. You will be able to view four video streams simultaneously from any display in the system.

New Simrad Pilots

Simrad AP28Hey, lookie here. New products from Simrad, or as you will probably soon come to know them, Navico. It looks like Simrad has introduced two new autopilot control heads and new main processors.

The Autopilot is Your Friend

Every October my yacht club has a Fall cruise to Avalon, on Catalina Island, which my family and I try not to miss. October is the best boating month of the year here in Southern California, because the crowds are small and the weather is usually gorgeous.

New Furuno AIS

Furuno FA30Furuno has just introduced a recreational version of a black box AIS receiver. Their popular, but expensive, FA150 tranceiver has been great for those willing to step up with the big dollars for one of the original systems on the market.

Somebody is paying attention...

G Series vs. 3D

It appears Raymarine has scheduled a premiere of their G-Series product line right at the same time as Furuno's launch of NavNet 3D during the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show.

MMSI Numbers and Your VHF

Now that DSC-ready radios are the standard and you likely have that red emergency button on the front of yours, do you know if anyone will be listening if you press it? The answer is maybe.

Remember Radio Geeks?

Some people think geeks are a product of the computer generation, but long before computers there were HAM radios. Enthusiasts of HAM radio, who sat in dark basements and talked to strangers 3,000 miles away about propagation and signal-to-noise ratios, were the original geeks. Since the proliferation of computers, however, HAM geeks and their marine cousins using Single Sideband have become a smaller and smaller subset of the geek kingdom.

Raymarine ST70 Instruments

I haven't been shy about expressing my opinion to anyone who would listen that Raymarine needs to introduce some new products, other than VHF radios.

ST70: RaymarineRaymarineST70

I just saw their new ST70 instruments - now that's what I'm talking about!

NavNet 3D Revisited

With Furuno's big sales meeting over with, there are some features about the long anticipated NavNet 3 system (named NavNet 3D) coming to light.
