GLEN JUSTICE
The KZ Valve Electric Seacock by KZCO Inc. can be operated and monitored from the helm — or just about anyplace else — thanks to a motor mounted on top.
Long a feature on much larger boats, the KZ Valve brings electric seacocks to the smaller boat market. The model we saw was difficult to operate manually, a feature that company officials say will likely be remedied. But otherwise it is a strong idea.
Operating seacocks remotely means the captain is more likely to close them when away from the boat, which is a strong safety measure. As the company notes, and BoatUS confirms, most boats that sink do so at the dock. It also makes it easier to exercise seacocks, so they don't freeze up.
The motors mounted on the KZ Valve are waterproof and meet ignition standards. They are available in a variety of sizes. A 1-inch seacock will cost about $875.
