On the Docks: Mochi Craft Long Range 23

Long Range 23Long Range 23

Move over Prius and welcome the zero emission diesel-electric hybrid from Norberto Ferretti.

Just when you thought bigger meant a blow to global warming, the Mochi Craft Long Range 23 (2008/2009), company officials say, offers mega owners a chance to leave port in absolute silence while creating no smoky exhaust.

This hybrid combines the reliability of traditional diesel with the ability to cruise in "zero emissions mode," thanks to electric engines.Below the waterline, she has a unique Ferretti hull design and bow bulb and prop tunnels, which the company claims will improve stability by 50 percent and allow the vessel to sit on the sea bottom while protecting the props.

The Long Range 23 has an LOA of 77 feet, 9 inches, a beam of 21 feet, displaces about 192,000 pounds (loaded) and draws 5 feet, 1 inch. And dressed in a fine-china blue, this vessel is a visual stunner.

But unless you plan to buy, don't bother cozying-up to the red velvet owners' rope at the show. Even Mad Mariner got the cold shoulder. We barely got a brochure, let alone the base price. Then again, if you have to ask...
