Edson Marine, Mad Mariner's latest advertiser, is now sponsoring the weekly High Score Contest on The Docking Game. Winners each week will receive Edson products, such as a PowerKnob for your steering wheel or a One-Step Boarding Step for sailboats.

The Docking Game, Mad Mariner's unique web-based video game, has been played by almost 50,000 people since its launch last year. But the interest has increased in the last month, when we began a regular High Score Contest with a winner announced each week. So far, we have given away prizes ranging from a deck key to a handheld depth sounder.
Now, the guys at Edson have raised the stakes.
Edson Marine has been making advanced steering systems and other innovative products for 150 years, and the company has graciously offered to contribute the weekly prize. It's cool stuff, too.
PowerKnobs are a nifty device that makes steering dramatically easier, allowing you to easily wind the wheel, rather than steering hand over hand. It is not uncommon to see them on workboats, water taxis and other vessels driven by pros. They bolt on using simple tools, hold up to weather and come in a variety of colors, including black, stainless, gold, wood – even one with a ComfortGrip.
Some of the editors here at Mad Mariner have used the PowerKnob for years and swear by it as a tool that, when properly installed, can significantly enhance maneuverability on some boats by making it easier to steer. They range in price from $59.95 to $94, and can be purchased both in marine stores and directly through Edson.
Of course, you can also win one playing The Docking Game.
We are less familiar with the One-Step Boarding Step, but the concept is sound. The step attaches to the stanchions of your lifeline gate and hangs against the side of your boat, where neoprene bumpers insure that it won't mar the hull.
It is cast in aluminum and coated in a baked-on, glossy-white urethane coating to resist weather. At just 5 pounds, it should store easily in a locker and be simple to deploy. It sells for $194 for just the step or $215 with six feet of braided line and stainless steel snap shackles.
Again, it's a very cool prize.
So give the game a shot. It gets you thinking about the boat, keeps your mind on docking and it might put some great Edson gear on your boat this summer.
