JOCK WESTShowtime is a 1969 63' Trumpy
For many classic yacht enthusiasts, the Trumpy line of wooden yachts, built mostly during the middle half of the 20th century, are the epitome of elegant simplicity. John Trumpy and his two sons designed and built yachts for many of the uber-rich of the early 20th century, including the du Pont and Guggenheim families. And the famous presidential yacht Sequoia is a classic Trumpy.
Word comes this week that a 1969 Trumpy, the 63' Sinbad, is being refit by a shipyard in Massachusetts and will be re-launched June 20 as Showtime, a floating high-tech product demonstrator. With Raymarine, Interlux, Awlgrip, Imtra, Ronstan, Edson and Yacht Record as sponsors and suppliers, Showtime will travel the boat-show circuit for the next year showing off its new suits. Showtime will debut at the American Superyacht Forum in Newport, Rhode Island, on June 23.
If you're a fan of Trumpy yachts, have a look at the tribute website TrumpyYachts, which tries to keep track of all Trumpy yachts still afloat. The site has some great history about the company and some of the more famous boats.
