Organizing Your Boat/Paperwork

Not seeing a dedicated place, I'll toss in here...

I have found that building a boat adds some other aspects to record keeping:

  • - you tend to mess up your plans and reference works... make copies and keep the originals safe
  • - you have to have receipts to show that it was truely home built when you go to get a HIN (Hull Identification Number), etc. Make sure and keep them.
  • - you may have to prove costs to various tax authorities, depending on your jurisdiction
  • You not only have your boat materials themselves to keep up with, but I bet you will be adding tool manuals and other fun stuff to pile around the house and loose. Try to organize from the beginning :-)

Buildin a boat - man that's an endeavor. What made you want to do that, with so many fine boats out there to buy. I bet the record keeping is the least of your worries.

No problem about the bullets...tell me why you are building!

Man, entire articles have been written on why to build a boat... and probably even more on why NOT to build a boat. Hmmm... maybe I should submit one :-)

Anyway, it probably boils down to a few reasons:

  • Can't find exactly what I want commercially
  • Money - I can spread the cost WAY out by buying a piece at a time
  • Fascinated with the process, plans, etc.
  • I enjoy working with wood... I don't live near water and boating will (for a while) be a few weeks a year endeavor, so I can enjoy the "trip" to getting a boat for a while this way

And the last and most important reason: I want to :-)

Even keeping normal (not home-built) records in order can be a challenge.  I use a 3-ring binder, with plastic sleeves that hold state registration, USCG documentation, insurance certificates and proof of purchase.  Propbably overkill, but it stays in one locker, all the pages are more or less waterproof and I know where to stick whatever the latest update that comes in the mail...
