US Army T-boat conversion

I have recently acquired T447, vessel name Nunatak.  This was acquired by the U.S. Park Service in 1969 after spending years after being built in mothball fleet.  They made modifications by extending house forward 4' and adding raised pilot house.  The Park Service used her for logistical support for Glacier Bay National Park, operating out of Juneau, Alaska.  She was very well maintained by her master of 20 some years, who recently retired.  The vessel was then surplused and auctioned.  Since then she has been tied up in Petersburg, Alaska, while I develop a conversion plan.  The engine room is original: Cat D-375 main with manual gear, Waukesha 1800LC aux supplying 110VDC ship's power, distribution panels, etc. are as built.  I would like to gut the engine room and start new.  Is anyone interested in any of the original equipment?  I have been told the main has about 30,000 hours since it was rebuilt in 1981.  I have considered keeping the main as frankly they just don't build them like that anymore, however as I may put the vessel into commercial service I can't risk down time waiting for parts which may be difficult to find.  Also I am curious if anyone knows optimum hull speed for these vessels, and any power and wheel conversions that have achieved this.  Thanks—

Sounds like an amazing vessel. I'll forward your comments to the author. Maybe she can help.

Hi Wally - I just ran across this site and your post.  Wanted to let you know I own T-490 and have been collecting information and pictures of US Army T-Boats for about 12 years now.  I have a pretty extensive listing.  I have been trying to keep the memory of these old girls alive.  I also have assisted in saving a couple. I publish a lot of information on them in my Journal

I have your boat listed but was unable to obtain the T number until your post.  Best of luck with her and if I can assist you in any way don't hesitate to ask.  I have a full set of plans on Design 2001.  I will also post your comment on equipment to other owners.

Best Regards
