Janet Groene did a nice job with her piece in today's edition of Mad Mariner; a nice collection of recommendations.

One of my personal pet peeves is monitoring the temperatures in my chill chest and freezer when I'm away from the marina.  When I leave the boat, the temps are fine -- nice and cold.  And when I get back to the boat, sometimes days later, the temps are also fine.  But how do I know what's happened in between?

I've come up with a couple of tricks, but I think the ultimate solution will be some kind of min-max recording thermometer I can leave inside the fridge and check when I come back aboard.

In the meantime, I leave the microwave powered while connected to shorepower.  That way, when I get back to the boat and see the familiar blinking "12:00" I know the power has been off for at least long enough to trip up the clock.

Then I check the popsicle in the freezer.  If it's de-formed or otherwise melted and re-frozen, I assume that both it and the fridge were without power long enough for safe temps to have been compromised and I start tossing.

Anybody have a source for that little min-max thermometer?

There are a bunch of thermometers that record max and min temps out there. That sounds like the right soolution. Franksly, it's a good idea, and really ought to be standard equipment on these marine units. If the AC power cut out for a day or two while you are away, you'd really never know.

I got one at the Miami Boat Show from Dometic. They were displaying  their refrigerators and freezers and giving them away for free.  It wasn't a digital one and it's not fancy but it is a fridge/freezer thermometer. I thought it was a nice freebie.

Tom, in add'n to the flashing light which could happen if power was off for as little as a minute; I put a fresh ice cube in a paper cup & put in freezer.  If you check cup & cup just shows a flat ice cube you know power has been off for quite some time.  Not fool proof as an unopened freezer will stay cold for quite some time.  A flat ice cube will definitely indicate an extended power outage.
