For the Doyles: as a longtime Nobeltec Admiral user, I salute you for an insightful look at this excellent product which has proven excellent in use for me over many miles and many years.

Your story is one more confirmation of the rumors along the waterfront that Jeppeson/Nobeltec will soon abandon support for its own Passport World Charts, something hovering over Nobeltec customers since the purchase of C-Map was announced.

Question: what do your sources at Nobeltec tell you about an upgrade path for those of us with a substantial investment in Passport World Charts (my coverage, for example, is the entire east coast of the U.S., Bahamas, whole Caribbean, whole Mediterranean, and Northern Europe). Are we starting from the get-go and expected to pay full list price for comparable C-Map coverage, or will we be offered an "upgrade price" to move from PWC to C-Map coverage of the areas we now hold?

Also, I happen to have two navigation devices that will use C-Map cartography: Nobeltec and Furuno NavNet. However, they use different format charts: vector charts on CD for Nobeltec and on EPROMs for NavNet. As someone who use to own a company that was a serious player in retail sales of electronic charting, my gut tells me that I'd best not expect any deals on double coverage. Agree?

Many thanks,

--Milt Baker, Nordhavn 47 Bluewater, Barcelona, Spain

Milt - you have a beautiful boat!

I'll alert the Doyles to your question. We'll see what they know.

Milt -

After consulting with the Doyles, it seems there is much discussion on this topic in all quarters. Nobeltec is expected to announce their policy and preview some goodies at the Miami Boat Show, which runs Feb. 14-18. The Doyles will have more to say around that time too -- their conclusion to the series will run concurrent with the show. I wish I could tell you more, but information is still soft at this point.
