Support The International Year Of The Reef

If you do any of your boating in areas with coral reefs, you have undoubtedly marveled at the many species that make their home in and around reefs. Unfortunately, reefs are quite fragile and the threats to their viability are increasing every day. For this reason 2008 has been designated the International Year of the Reef (IYOR).

The year-long campaign initiated by the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) is soliciting help from individuals, organizations, government agencies and non-governmental organizations. General direction for the IYOR 2008 comes from the ICRI Secretariat; however, each country plans and organizes its own activities at the local and/or national level.

Among the ways you can support IYOR 2008 are:

  1. Translate IYOR 2008 materials for inclusion on the website.
  2. Register for e-mail updates.
  3. Educate yourself and others about coral reefs.
  4. Organize IYOR 2008 activities and events. (The website even provides a number of ideas.)

A Tip-of-the-Day feature draws its inspiration from NOAA's Coral Reef Conservation Program, which has a long list "Things You Can Do to Protect Coral Reefs." Among the tips for boaters is to make sure sewage is correctly treated so it doesn't damage coral reef eco-systems. Never anchor on a reef either. Opt instead for a mooring buoy system, if available, or anchor well away from the reef. And be sure to pay attention to local guidelines. You may also want to participate in a reef cleanup; and, if you like to dive, keep your hand, fins and other gear off the reef.
