Various Chain Lengths Make for Versatile Anchoring

I get extra versatility out of my anchors by carrying a couple of different lengths of chain to use with them. An anchor that's a little heavy for a lunch hook can be rendered easy to handle by being shackled to the nylon rode directly. Then, if you need more security, a short length of chain, perhaps 10 feet, will improve the holding of the anchor and protect the rode from chafe on the bottom. If you fear conditions may get a bit rugged, shackle on a longer length of chain from the bilge and trade off some convenience for even more holding power.

Use one size larger shackle than the chain gauge, and always mouse the shackle pin with a wire tie for security. It is an easy and relatively inexpensive way to get more from whatever types of anchors you carry.
