Take the Time to Explain

New skippers often have the best intentions but not the best verbal skills. New boaters often are afraid or wary of the new environment they are thrown into. Since a happy crew makes for a great boating experience, be specific in what duties each crewmember has, and explain in simple terms what you expect. Holding the boat "into the wind" means nothing if you don't know where the wind is. Preventing the proverbial shouting match will keep you from losing crew and putting strains on your marriage.

Have fun and be safe, but don't get caught up in being the perfect mariner. That comes with time. Concentrate on being a good skipper for your crew.

– Gene Weisheit
